St. Augustine ADA Compliant Sidewalks and Night of Lights
Richard Acree
St. Augustine, FL, is a beautiful town on the east coast of Florida known for sun and surf and a very special small downtown area that is great to visit. But, St. Augustine also has a reputation for ADA compliance, as was recently observed while walking around the area. Trees are known to cause significant uplifting to sidewalks which can make ADA compliance for exterior routes very difficult. But, St. Augustine has taken the initiative to shave off these raised walkways so the differential elevations are at least not abrupt. The photo on the right is representative. Not perfect ADA compliance but a reasonable effort to mitigate the damage done by growing trees.
St. Augustine is also known for the Night of Lights display they put on for the holidays between Thanksgiving through mid January. The photo below is an example of the lights.
Even the boats in the harbor are illuminated. The photo below is representative of a night shot.
So if you are looking for a new place to visit or live, give St. Augustine a look. You won’t regret it!
