Veterans are Largely Unaware of VA Housing Grants for Aging in Place

An article posted on Yahoo Finance states that “A majority of U.S. veterans are not aware of the fact they can qualify for grants from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to allow them to age in place, according to survey data from senior advocacy group AARP.

Sixty percent of veterans who are 45 and older “are unaware that VA provides grant funding for home modifications, and almost a quarter of veterans say they need financial assistance to modify their homes to continue living there,” according to an article published by the VA.

Richard Acree at ADA Inspections Nationwide, LLC, is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) consultant providing planning for aging-in-place home modifications, sometimes referred to as Residential Accessibility. CAPS is a residential accessibility services credential certified by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) that offers principles to improve safety and accessibility in your home, regardless of your age or physical condition. And, Richard has experience working with loans from the Veterans Administration for these home modifications.

Aging in Place (AIP) design principles focus on barrier-free accessibility for residential properties (homes, apartments, condos and town houses) similar to how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design focuses on barrier-free accessibility for commercial buildings. CAPS design takes your current and future circumstances into consideration to improve your quality of life while staying in your home so you can “age in place”, versus moving to assisted living.
