Richard Acree, owner and inspector at ADA Inspections Nationwide, LLC, (ADAIN) is a certified aging-in-place specialist (CAPS). CAPS is a residential accessibility services credential certified by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) that offers principles to improve safety and accessibility in your home, regardless of your age or physical condition. Representative CAPS projects completed by Richard at ADAIN include the following:

1. Naples, FL 3000 square foot one-level home for two senior citizens, one with limited mobility, who wish to remodel to make the home safer and more accessible for themselves and visitors. Both residents are in their 80s.

2. Steamboat Springs, CO 3500 square foot 3-level home for a disabled individual with dementia after a career in the National Football League. The disabled individual was a male patient 6’5” in height and 250 pounds. His wife was going to be the primary care giver. Both residents are in their 80s.

3. Marion, IN 3700 square foot 3-level home for a couple who were renovating their home when one became disabled significantly due to injuries in a head-on automobile collision. After months in the hospital and many surgeries, including removal of one leg below the knee, the disabled individual was sent home before the prosthetic was available for use. The couple wanted to change their renovation plans to accommodate the injuries to the victim of the collision.

4. Alexandria, VA 1500 square foot 2-level townhouse for an individual with mobility limitations, who needed to approach the HOA with a plan to alter the home to accommodate her condition. The alterations included an accessible parking space near the unit and the accessible route from the accessible parking to an entrance to the unit.

5. Canal Winchester, OH 3000 square foot 3-level home with a disabled veteran living with mobility limitations who was working with the Veterans Administration (VA) to improve the home using a grant from the VA.

6. Ohio (OH) family who wanted to relocate to a new home in Waxhaw, NC and accommodate the limitations for a family member living with Cerebral Palsy and spastic quadriplegia. This project involved plans and specifications reviews, site reviews, and coordination with a Case Manager, lender, a court system in OH and local builders in the Waxhaw area to alter a new home to accommodate the needs of the family.

7. Franklin, TN 3800 square foot 3-story home for a couple in their 50s where one of the individuals had developed a medical condition that imposed mobility and cognitive limitations requiring constant assistance for the disabled individuals. Step systems in the 40 year old home were steep and long. Many spaces in the home needed alteration so the disabled individual could age in place with help from relatives and professional care providers.

8. Brentwood, TN 3000 square foot one story home for a couple relocating from Indiana to be near their relative. The couple was in their 60s. The woman was also a nurse and was very familiar with mobility limitations due to her experience at work. This couple was working with a contractor to renovate and alter a home to age-in-place before they made the move. The couple shared the property condition report for the aging-in-place recommendations with the contractor.
