Long answer: CAPS stands for Certified Aging in Place Services. Some confuse this to only mean helping the elderly remain in their own homes as they age. While that is one segment of the population that CAPS can help, it is far from the only segment. The following list shows how a CAPS consultant can help many more segments of the population.
People who have accidents or become ill in such a way that their ability to maneuver (accessibility) in their own home is limited.
Young adult children who take care of an aging parent in their home.
Families with physically or mentally challenged children.
Caregivers charged with helping elderly or challenged people in their homes.
Health Care Professionals who are asked for names of CAPS trained consultants for assistance.
Interior Designers who recognizes a client with mobility issues and know a CAPS consultant should be called for assistance.
Home remodeler who recognizes a client with mobility issues and know a CAPS consultant should be called for assistance.
Contractors and specialists who recognizes a client with mobility issues and know a CAPS consultant should be called for assistance.
Lawyers of injured clients who recognize clients with mobility issues and know a CAPS consultant should be called for assistance.
Long distance caregivers responsible for a distant relative or loved one.
People relocating and needing help finding a home that will allow them to age in place.
People relocating and needing help preparing their home for sale.
People who want to visit other people but the visitor is disabled and has difficulty accessing their friend’s home.
CAPS design principles focus on barrier-free accessibility for residential properties (homes, apartments, condos and town houses) similar to how the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design focuses on barrier-free accessibility for commercial buildings. CAPS design takes current and future circumstances into consideration to improve quality of life while staying in the home. CAPS employs concepts of universal design with the principles of the ADA Standards and Federal Housing Act (FHA) to make a home a safer place for everyone. That’s why aging-in-place services are sometimes referred to as residential accessibility services, or safety inspections.
