Church ADA Parking

Look at the photo on the right. This is an example of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) done right.

What you see there are accessible vehicle parking spaces at a church on St. George Island in Florida. The two spaces on the left share an access aisle and the van accessible parking space on the right has it own access aisle. All access aisles lead to a walking path in front of the parking spaces that leads to the front entry to the church. That way individuals who park in these spaces do not have to walk behind the parked vehicles.

The parking surface is concrete, which is suitable as a level, stable, firm and slip resistant surface. Note that the loose gravel in the foreground of the photo above would not be suitable for an accessible route to the Church entrance.

The signs for the accessible parking are installed on the wall of the church at a proper height. The ISA markings on the surface of the parking spaces are not required by the ADA Standards but are normally required by State or local building codes.

SUMMARY: All in all, these accessible parking spaces are a great example of doing the ADA right. Accessible parking should include an adequate number of accessible spaces with access aisles that connect to an accessible route to the nearest entrance to the facility. Signage must be included for each parking space.
