The United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that 8 out of 10 Covid-19-related deaths reported in the United States have been among adults aged 65 years and older. As of July 3, 2020, there have been 2,732,531 cases and 128,648 deaths in the United States from the Covid 19 virus. That means approximately 103,000 of the Covid 19 deaths in the US have occurred to people over the age of 65.

According to the American Association of Retired People (AARP), as of June 11, 2020, “more than 43,000 long-term care residents and staff have died from COVID-19, representing over a third of the nation’s known coronavirus deaths, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation tally. While dire, this figure is an undercount, experts warn, because not all states are publicly reporting data yet.”

Clearly the group of people most susceptible to death from Covid 19 are those living in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.

Home modifications by a Certified Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) may help people avoid moving to assisted living facilities and nursing homes. Aging in Place home modifications incorporate Universal Design changes or additions that make a home safer and more accessible, especially for those with disabilities, regardless of their age.

A CAPS consultant can help with the design and installation of aging in place home modifications. Richard Acree is a CAPS consultant with many years of experience as a home inspector and accessibility inspector.
