Hawaii Stairs and Directional Sign
Please see the photo on the right. This is a common installation found in Honolulu, Hawaii. What you see there is a stair installation for a retail entity. But stairs are not considered part of an accessible route. So in this case there is an alternative route for the disabled. Look close on the left and you can see a small sign.
Hawaii Directional Sign
The photo on the left is a closeup of the sign. This is referred to as the International Symbol of Accessibility, or ISA. It is pointing to the right, indicating an accessible route is to the right. That’s great, although in this installation I would have placed the directional sign on the right side of the steps.
