Please look at the photo on the right. What you are seeing is a directional sign in Columbus, GA, at a ramp leading to the river walk along the Chattahoochee River. This is a great example of the ADA done right! The photo below is a closeup of the sign pointing to the ramp that leads to the accessible restrooms down by the river.

Directional signs are only required by the 2010 ADA Standards for direction to or information about interior spaces and facilities of the site, not for exterior toilet rooms. But, it is important to remember that the ADA Standards are a minimum. It is acceptable for an entity to go beyond the ADA Standards if they believe the effort is warranted and the installations are designed and installed consistent with the principles of the ADA.

Congratulations to Columbus, GA, for going to the extra effort of installing this sign to help disabled individuals find the accessible ramp to the accessible toilet rooms. And for those not familiar with the river walk in Columbus, GA, I highly recommend a trip to see it in person. It is magnificent!
