Protruding Objects Museum Accessibility in Cody Wyoming
Recently on a road trip through Wyoming I found examples of compliant and non-compliant Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) displays and elements in a museum. Public museums are Title III public accommodations facilities that must comply with the ADA, including the requirements for protruding objects. At this museum some displays have excellent barriers at displays that serve as detectable warnings for individuals living with impaired vision, and some do not. Please look at the photo below. This is a photo of a display with a barrier around the display that is within the 27-inch detection zone for protruding objects.

In the photo below another display does not have any detectable warning around the display, and several components of the display can easily impact an individual walking nearby or using a mobility device because they are not within the 27-inch detection zone for protruding objects.

Also, some wall mounted elements extend more than 4 inches from the wall but are not within the 27-inch detection zone for protruding objects. The photo below shows a hand sanitizer that protrudes more then 4 inches from the wall and the bottom of the dispenser is more than 27 inches above the floor.

2010 ADA Standard 307.2, [Protruding Objects] Protrusion Limits, states, “Objects with leading edges more than 27 inches (685 mm) and not more than 80 inches (2030 mm) above the finish floor or ground shall protrude 4 inches (100 mm) maximum horizontally into the circulation path. EXCEPTION: Handrails shall be permitted to protrude 4½ inches (115 mm) maximum.” The graphic below is representative of this Standard.
